Yeah, you're right. Sadly Phonon doesn't yet allow us to disable the video output - but we're pushing the Phonon devs to help us out on that one

Yeah, I'm afraid that won't work. You can only have displays next to each other and they must be aligned the top. That's the only safe configuration with Plasma currently, sorry.

I'm investigating this one and can hopeful fix it. Am a bit busy right now, though. Alas, we'll see.

Hi, What's your screen configuration? would you mind posting your complete xorg.conf? I have also trouble with my X configuration longer than I can think of. I have a small laptop display (1440x900) below a large desktop (Where nvidia doesn't even recognizes the larger screen and I have to feed it a custom EDID)

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Device0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
Option "NoLogo" "true"
Option "CustomEDID" "CRT:/etc/X11/SyncMaster2343.bin"
Option "TwinView" "1"
Option "TwinViewXineramaInfoOrder" "DFP-0"
I was going by the bug report on the issue (178066) where you said,

"for panels on screens that do not abut the desktop, this really feels like an x11 problem, not something we should try and work around in plasma-desktop."

I can understand getting frustrated if you say something is in the pipeline, or you say you aren't sure if it is going to work but you will give it a try, and then someone turns around and claims you aren't going to work on it.

But in this case you flat-out said you didn't think you should work on it. I don't think it is fair for you to chastise me for listening to your own statement on the issue. You made what sounded like a pretty definitive statement, and so I accepted it as such.

That is from the last comment you made in that bug report. Martin then makes a bunch of comments arguing strongly against doing anything related to this, which are in line with your own comment and you don't offer any disagreement.

There are no further updates from you, no mention that you tried certain methods, no comment on why the proposed method didn't work, and no chance for anyone else to propose alternative methods you might not have thought of.

I had what I thought was a definitive statement, several other statements supporting it, and nothing that would indicate anything to the contrary, so I accepted it at face value. I am not sure what else I can do under such situations. Should I just not believe you when you say you are or are not going to work on something?

you mean like other issues we've reported that have gone completely unfixed?

we do communicate with x.org. ime it's not a very coherent community (balkanized into x.org devs from different companies and groups, driver developers who work on properietary and/or open drivers) and it has a lot more on its plate than they have developer resources for.

"Plasma developers have refused to address this issue."

i actually spent some time ~2 weeks ago playing with various work-arounds and band-aids in plasma-desktop. nothing was really satisfactory and everything had corner cases that were impractical to cover which were likely to cause new problems elsewhere. i don't like playing whack-a-mole with bugs: "fix" one to create 1 or more others.

of course, you just assume that we "refuse" to address the issue.

days like this i wonder why i even bother contributing to this community.

The problem with that layout is that it now becomes hard to unhide panels at the bottom of the smaller screen. Plasma will only unhide panels if the mouse is on the screen edge, but it is hard to get the mouse on the screen edge which leads to very finicky behavior.

Plasma developers have refused to address this issue. They consider these sorts of dead-area issues to be the fault of xorg and won't implement any workaround on their end.

I haven't heard any mention of KDE developers getting in touch with xorg developers to try to push them to resolve these issues, although they might have done so. If they haven't, I think they should, since telling KDE users it is an xorg problem while not telling xorg developers it is an xorg problem pretty much guarantees nothing is going to get fixed.

I'm not sure how other drivers handle the "dead areas" that exist when you have different screen resolutions. So it might very well be NVidia specific - after all it's TwinView that's creating one big virtual desktop for KDE. KDE seems to be kind of aware of it... kind of.

Let's hope some other KDE devs with a little more insight on the subject can shed some light on this one.

New datapoint: When I do get the lag, it goes away only when I quit firefox normally. However, I tried various things once I got the lag to see if it would go away without closing firefox, and found that if I shade and unshade the firefox windows the lag goes away. No idea what this means exactly.
