Penguin's last problems.

You know, there are just few things Linux really lacks support - or in other words: sucks.

Here are just a few examples which bothered me more than once at least.

First of all: Flash integration. The Flash Plugin offered by Macromedia is crappy. It crashes far too often, doesn't react exactly the same way as in Windows and so is inconsistent. Since I do a lot of Web Development with Linux, I often have to deal with that problem.

Next point: Soundsystems. There is OSS (haha, no system, kay), Arts, ALSA, eSound and so on.
In my eyes the sound system should be integrated in X. This would ease Audio/Video synchronization, since you don't have to care about the audio buffer the specific system uses. The software developers won't have to worry about supporting multiple interfaces any longer... and finally: Everyone would be able to use different sound sources at the same time out of the box. At the moment, I still have to built a special version of xmms, mplayer and et cetera.

Here we go, it just had to be here anyway: X11 configuration is ugly. No, I got no problems configuring my X with multiple desktops, screens and resolutions. But others do. I would suppose X to react this way: If there is no configuration, try to start in 640x480 VESA and then offer a default configuration mode, which enables you to specify your configuration and hardware. There should be an API for KDE and Gnome (and all the others), allowing them to change the modes and options via a version-independent interface.

PCMCIA drivers is another topic. The configuration is frustrating, and I'd really love to see the card drivers in the normal kernel tree, built as normal modules.

Re: soundsystems: You are mistaking sound drivers with the application running on top. Especially X has nothing to do with sound output. You might want to consider having a look at a card featuring multi-open though (like the Audigy), that removes a whole lot of problems.

As for PCMCIA, use a hotplug agent.

till: i'm not talking about the drivers itself. of course they should still be integrated in the kernel / delivered as modules.

i'm talking about a sound environment, like x11 is already offering a graphics interface. this added to the x protocol, would enable you to have remote sound, too.
